Closing up your Vacation Home on the Outer Banks

It’s the one of the most terrible times of the year … closing up your Summer Vacation home on the Outer Banks for the (dare I say it?) Winter. It is a sad sad state of affairs, indeed. However, as much as we hate to, winterizing your Outer Banks vacation home still has to be done ….

outer banks fallHere are a few things you won’t want to forget to do!

  • Cutback and prune trees around the house and walkways.
  • Clean out the gutters and make sure the downspouts are all intact and inline for the best drainage.
  • Remove and drain out any outside hoses. Make sure they are tucked away from winters cold blasts.
  • Winterize your swimming pool – or have it professionally done.
  • Bring in all summer fun stuff to store – lawn chairs, toys, grills, tool and anything else outside. If storage is tight or lawn furniture is just too big, cover it and make sure it’s tacked down securely.
  • Turn off all water to the house at the main shutoff. It is always a good idea to have it professionally winterized. This may save you a huge expense, should the power go off and the temps dip.
  • If you do choose to turn off the power over the winter months, turn off the furnace and make sure all the kitchen appliances are cleaned and aired out. Be sure to make sure the refrigerator door is propped open so it doesn’t get musty over the winter.
  • Turn off all the electricity at the panel/breakers and the gas is turned off at the entry.
  • See if a neighbor or friend could check in periodically to make sure nothing has happened or gone wrong with your vacation home.
  • AND take any plants with you – they may not make the winter with their heat source shut off.

It’s never fun to leave the Outer Banks for the Summer; however, the good side is – Spring is only:
